As part of a major new ERP deployment across all countries within their emerging market and Latin American regions DHL needed an effective and robust method of training all key support staff to a common level of competence. SOLO provided DHL Global Business Systems with the ideal solution to the role out of centralized, standardized, high quality training and assessments to all key personnel in each of the 100+ countries involved in the implementation.

The material was created in collaboration between ERP product experts and DHL’s own process gurus based at a number of location including Brussels, London and Miami. The material includes process guides, technical procedures and rich, interactive product simulations and is currently accessible by around 400 staff across 70+ sites.

DHL’s “unexpected parcel”: the ability to analyse training events and trainees in an infinite number of different ways

SOLO was selected by the project management team because of its ability to train a huge number of staff (2000+ spread across multiple locations) in the use of the newly implemented requisition and procurement system. The training material was produced by system and business specialists and split by role into those who raise requisitions, those who review and those who authorize.

The role split enables training to be targeted at specific groups rather than forcing everyone through a generic program that delivers irrelevant content to an inappropriate audience. Role-based assessments provide managers with the ability to check the understanding and competence of staff using the system and use the results to pinpoint the need for further training, coaching or explanation.

The IOM’s “government surplus”: a customized interface adopting the look and feel of their procurement system.

SOLO was selected to support the implementation of AB Agri’s new ERP system because of its ability to serve training to staff at the point of need. The categorization and compartmentalization of material was a significant factor in the choice of SOLO because of the varying training needs of staff in different roles and different companies within the group.

Training has been expanded beyond the straightforward system and incorporates processes and procedures relating to changes brought about by the project.

AB Agri’s “whiskey galore”: a spreadsheet upload tool for uploading user details.

SOLO was selected as the ideal way of delivering training on the company accounting system to staff based at sites as far apart as South East England, Scotland and Hawaii, the site of a major observatory. PPARC were lucky enough to have one of the UK’s few product training experts on site at the time helping with system configuration. He built a reserve of high quality material accessible to staff involved in a number of roles within the organization.

Ultimately PPARC was taken over by another research council who used a different accounting system. PPARC took the decision to stop using SOLO as the material it contained was now redundant and the new system came with its own e-learning system but the flexible transfer system meant that none of the material was lost. Who knows, within a couple of years another takeover may mean the transferred material can be put back into commission!

PPARC’s “Sky at Night”: the facility to assess and report on the progress of learners.

SOLO was selected as part of a 3 tier solution to the problem of providing training to very small numbers of people spread across many, many different countries. The 3 parts of the training solution involved initial training using Webex, robust continuation training using SOLO and the creation of a learning community using forums and discussion groups so staff could obtain peer support. SOLO was required to store and serve training relating to 4 major brand new systems including finance, CRM and HR. SOLO’s ability to create role-based training meant that all staff received the personalized backup to the Webex events instead of having to wade through a rambling collection of largely irrelevant material.

SHL’s “occupational profile”: the distinction of being our first and longest standing customer – well done guys, 2004 was a good year! You are officially entitled to the position of Friend of Learning Foundry.

Providing learners with an excellent and affordable training system that gives learners a similar experience they would expect from a standup training session.
